A good sale to Stockholm. Since we will get this in our email or comments about Norwegian being cheaper. On a fare basis, Norwegian is cheaper at about $340 roundtrip. However, that’s just part of the story. Norwegian unbundles everything while there are some things included with United.
- Checked luggage
- United – 1st bag free
- Norwegian – $42 per leg (so if you check your bags, that’s $84 for this trip)
- Carry-on luaggage
- United – 22″ roller + 1 personal item
- Norwegian – 10 kilos max (or ~22 pounds)
- Seat assignment
- United – most advance seat assignment are free
- Norwegian – if you want advance seat assignment – $17. So that’s $34 roundtrip.
- Onboard food + beverage
- United – your water and soda, free
- Norwegian – you will pay for everything (don’t forget a blanket, cause Norwegian, yeah, they don’t have any)
- Frequent flyer miles
- United: This trip is 7,800+ miles. That 60% needed for a domestic one-way ticket. We value that at $78
- Norwegian: They have an award program — but you can’t use it for much.
- United: single aisle 757.
Overhead video, no personal inflight entertainment or power.Correction: Per @ZachHonig, United 757 across the Atlantic have on-demand inflight entertainment.
- Norwegian: Boeing 787. That’s when there isn’t an issue and not substituted with a plane from HiFly or EuroAtlantic (we feel for you if you get the EuroAtlantic plane)
- United: single aisle 757.
If you don’t check bags, don’t care about advanced seat assignment, or frequent flyer miles — definitely Norwegian is more cost effective. Tho, they been terrible with on-time performance because of their aggressive scheduling of their fleet. While most airlines with years of long haul experience operate their planes at most 14 hours a day, Norwegian who never had any long haul experience or any experience operating widebody planes decided in all their infinite wisdom to operate their planes 18 hours a day. So slight issues causes ripples in their schedule. And since their service isn’t daily, if the plane is out of service, you could be stranded for days when there is an issue (go google Los Angeles Norwegian). That’s why we are always put tons of caveat when we post a Norwegian deal.
We truly want Norwegian to succeed in the marketplace. The competition from Norwegian has meant that United and Delta has made its fares very competitive to Scandinavia. But at the same time, do realize that there’s more cost than just the ticket.
