United: Double Miles Promotion for Los Angeles/San Francisco/Orange County <-> Chicago Flights

American Airlines recently launch a double miles promotion for selective routes and United has responded with their own promotion.

Info and Registration: http://www.united.com/page/article/1,,53880,00.html. United’s promotion is significantly less generous than the American one:

  • United has fare class restrictions — most coach fares will not apply. American’s promotion — every mileage earning ticket applies (basically all tickets)
  • United’s promotion period is shorter — until 1/31/2012. American’s promotion last until 3/31/2012.

The promotion is similar in that both promotions offers both status and award miles in addition to accounts with addresses in California or Illinois. Outside of those similarities, the promotion is sub-par and not targeted at leisure travelers — it is geared toward business travelers who buy last minute tickets.
