Visit both Madrid, Spain & Hong Kong. About $720 + Miles.

This deal is for those with enough miles for Europe but not enough for Asia, but want to visit both. We did a variation of this last Christmas on British Airways from Barcelona to Hong Kong for $571.

The Deal:

Turkish Airlines has a €505 or $660 fare from Madrid to Hong Kong with 2 stopovers permitted in Istanbul for travel from November, 2013 – June, 2014. The Turkish fare is in class or 100% mileage earning with United. We wouldn’t have normally published this, but it is a mileage earning fare with United and it is an good example of mixing paid and mileage tickets to reduce the cost of a trip.

What You Need to Take Advantage:

  • Miles
    • American: 40,000 Miles. If award is for travel from May 16th – October 14th, it is 60,000 miles.
    • Delta: 60,000 Miles.
    • United: 60,000 Miles
    • US Airways: 60,000 Miles. (If you have 60,000 US Airways miles, you don’t need to buy a ticket since you can visit Hong Kong on US Airways miles via Europe and you can stopover for free in Europe). However, if you travel between January 15th – February 28th, US Airways charges only 35,000 miles from the United States to Europe.
    • Taxes for this redeeming miles should be between $50 – $100 depending on the connecting city. For those redeeming American miles, avoid using British Airways flights and you will save over $300 in fuel surcharges.

On roundtrip awards, you can have a stopover. In the American instance, the stopover has to be the outbound or inbound gateway city. Using this feature, we are showed a stopover in New York on the return and then a month or so later, head to Maui for the same amount of miles!

As a reminder: not all airline partner availability for mileage redemptions are displayed online.

  • To search for American and its partner availability, use BA.com (British Airways) and search award availability segment by segment. Then call AA.com to book
  • For Delta and its partner availability, we like to use AirFrance.US to search for availability
  • For United and its partner availability, United.com has most partners. ANA.CO.JP is the most comprehensive though
  • For US Airways, use United.com and or ANA.CO.JP since it doesn’t show anything but it’s own inventory

There you have it. For about $720 and between 40 – 60K miles, you can visit both Madrid and Hong Kong.

How to Book:

  • Use dates found at ITA Software Matrix Airfare Search and book on TurkishAirlines.com. Expedia.com, Orbitz.com and most online travel agencies can also ticket this fare.
  • Risk Free Cancellation: Normal itineraries that depart from the US have a risk free 24 hour hold or cancellation. However, since this originate from Europe, that is not necessarily true.
