Flight schedules often change, especially if you have a trip that is months out. What do you do when it happens to you?
- Check for alternative flights. We were originally scheduled to fly from Honolulu to Chicago to Newark. However, the Honolulu to Chicago flight was canceled. As a result, we were automatically re-booked from Honolulu to Dallas to Newark. Newark is a bit far for us, but we originally booked it because the fare sale was only to Newark.
- When we realized that the flight had changed, we went to the airline’s website and looked for the schedule into LaGuardia and found a better flight.
- Once we had the new flight, we called the airline and had them do a FREE change to the LaGuardia flight. LaGuardia is much easier and cheaper for us to get to.
This would’ve been more complicated if you are flying multiple airlines. In general, if your schedule changes by more than 30 minutes, call your airline and have them change it to a more favorable time or route. Always have alternatives for the agent before calling. This is especially important if you see a deal that doesn’t have an ideal routing or schedule months from now; the schedule will likely change.
