Fly to Europe, South America or North Asia for ~$1,500 in Business Class on Star Alliance

US Airways is running their 100% bonus buy/gift miles promotion again. Detail here: http://www.usairways.com/en-US/dividendmiles/programdetails/purchasemiles/default.html. The promotion is from August 1st – September 15th, 2011.

For approximately $1,500 you can buy 50,000 miles. With the bonus, you get a bonus of 50,000 miles resulting in 100,000 miles. $1,500 does sound a lot of money, but what you can get with it is fantastic. The maximum bonus for this promotion is 50,000. If you don’t have an US Airways Dividend Miles account, open one now. It needs to be at least 12 days old before you can buy miles.

100,000 miles with US Airways Dividend Miles will get you a business class seat with their Star Alliance partners (27 airlines and counting) to Europe, South America or North Asia (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macau, Mongolia, S. Korea, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).

The great things about US Airways and Star Alliance rewards are:

  • It lets you route via Europe to Asia and can stopover
  • No starnet blocking (e.g., limiting awards on partners like being reported with United miles)
  • Liberal routing rules

An example of a possible route to Hong Kong from New York:

  • Outbound from JFK-Zurich on Swiss (Stopover)
  • Continue on from Zurich – Hong Kong on Swiss (Destination)
  • Fly home on All Nippon Airways from Hong Kong -Tokyo (Narita) – JFK
  • Or vice versa. Basically, you are allow one stopover or open jaw

In essence, you can have a mini-round the world trip in business class for very little money. Before you decide to buy the miles, you can put an award on HOLD with US Airways for up to 3 days before ticketing. So check to see if there’s availability before buying the miles. The best way to check Star Alliance award availability is with All Nippon Airways, open a free mileage account with them, transfer 1,000 American Express Membership Rewards points and you can check availability with pretty much every Star Alliance carrier.
