The deal is gone. If you purchased and waiting for ticketing, please just be patient. DO NOT CALL!

Wideroe.no, a Norweign airline is not including fuel surcharges on fares on United Airlines between the United States and Europe Israel, India, the Middle East and Australia. We tested a few city pairs and for all itineraries with United flights, the fuel surcharge is not included. Just a few caveats for those intending to book:

  • It is an European site, so US DOT regulations on mistake fare might not necessarily apply
  • This will be billed in Norwegian Krone, so use a no fee foreign exchange credit card like American Express Platinum or Chase Sapphire to book to save on the 2-3% fees
  • Don’t book a hotel yet til its confirmed (e.g., you receive a confirmation with a ticket NUMBER!!!. A ticket number is NOT a record locator (Six Letters). It should be 016-XXXXXXXXXXXXX.)
  • Don’t call any service providers (wideroe, United etc). Repeat, DO NOT CALL!
  • With these deals, you win some and lose some. There is always the next deal if this one doesn’t work out.
  • Be proactive – great tip from urifintzy: “Our bank tried to decline transaction because it’s a Norwegian site. Contacted Fraud dept and told them its okay.” So call your bank to let them know you are or will be making a transaction in Norway
  • Book now, ask questions later.

Update 1 @ 11/23/2013 at 1:10PM Eastern – some availability to India. See screenshot below. Washington D.C. – Mumbai for under $300! Not all city pairs might work.

Update 2 @ 11/23/2013 @ 1:15PM Eastern – all transatlantic routes including Israel and the rest of the Middle East

Update 3 @ 11/23/2013 @ 1:45PM Eastern – Los Angeles – Sydney. $716.

Update 4 @ 11/23/2013 @ 2:50PM Eastern – Newark – Milan is by far the cheapest at $149.

Update 5 @ 11/23/2013 @ 4:00PM Eastern. Phone number problem? Thanks to Jill: Put only +1 in the left box. Then put the area code and the full 7 digit number in the right box. No dashes, parentheses etc.

Update 6 @ 11/23/2013 @ 4:15PM Eastern – wideroe is loading very slowly. Get a cup of coffee while you wait. It does load. Or try the advance search screen: https://www.wideroe.no/book/?l=en&adv=yes (copy and paste it)

Update 7 @ 11/23/2013 @ 8:45PM Eastern – multiple reports that it is erroring out after the passenger information screen. This looks like its gone or will soon to be gone. Now it is a waiting game for the ticket to be issued. We have been getting multiple reports that it is taking anywhere from 4 – 4.5 hours to be ticketed vs just being confirmed.

Update 8 @ 11/23/2013 @ 11:00PM Eastern – if you have a segment with Jet Airways or FlyDubai, your itinerary will be canceled and you will be soon receive this email:

Dear Customer

We were unable to complete your order. Your reservation has been canceled. Your credit card has not been charged.

The reason is that we do not have ticketing agreements with one or more airlines on your itinerary.

Please disregard the automatic confirmation we sent you by e-mail.

We apologize for the inconvenience and recommend that you book your travel directly from the airline’s website or via a travel agent.

Sincerely,
Widerøe Internet Booking

Update 9 @ 11/25/2013 @ 12:15PM Eastern – be patient. If you are, most questions including will it be honored? or when will it be ticketed? will sort itself out.

Update 10 @ 11/26/2013 @ 3:00AM Eastern – just to answer a few questions:

  1. Name change – not something that can be done. Small corrections (like a simple misspelling) can be done. But name change, no. It is airlines way of preventing speculation — e.g., people buying up all the cheap tickets and then reselling them.
  2. Date change – unlikely either. These fares are non-refundable with a change fee. The change fee is $300 (standard for all United international tickets). A date change will trigger a change fee or $300 + any fare difference.
  3. Cancellation – if you pass the 24 hour cancellation period, canceling for most tickets do not make sense as the change fee even for the refundable tickets (an example of an itinerary that was refundable was LAX-DXB) is $300 and most tickets sold was under $300.
  4. Extra ticket – e.g., booked 3 but need only 2. Wait for this to settle down — like next week or so. Then reach out to split the record locator to one that is traveling and one that isn’t. Then cancel the one that isn’t traveling — you will be out of the cost of that ticket since these fares are non-refundable and have a $300 change fee.
  5. Basically, these fares are no different than a normal fare when it comes to the terms and conditions.

The deal is gone. If you purchased and waiting for ticketing, please just be patient. DO NOT CALL!

I typed +1 into the left box and then the 10 digit number into the right.

For those of you who had “country code” error, please note again. Start over the search and you should see a different Passenger Details screen. This one will have a spot for your Frequent flier number, but no spot for your mailing address. This is the good screen. You can use the drop down box next to the international dialing code box and select the +44 UK code. The enter your phone number without any special characters or spaces in the right box. The proceed.

This worked for me. IAD-BOM RT for $307 per person! Charge has not hit my CC yet. But, I can see the non-ticketed itinerary in my United profile. Lets hope it gets ticketed.

It stated it would be cancelled after 2 hours or I could re-submit. Everything is perfect on my credit card so I don’t know why. I tried my Barclays card (which I had called earlier to alert) and re-submitted.

I had already given up but worth a shot.

    2) Don’t bring unwanted attention to something that is clearly amiss. You never know who will pick up the phone, see your $200 trip to Europe (or wherever) and flag for a manager or someone with decision making authority.
    3) Wideroe is in charge of ticketing, not united or the other airlines, so there’s zero point in calling the carrier. And I hope you wouldn’t dare call Wideroe…

Last summer I booked through Vayama the very same itinerary I booked yesterday, through wideroe. Vayama confirmed immediately, but it took them 3 business days to ticket.! And wideroe has only 6? 7? employees in their business. Not only that, I think they have to clear flights through their partners, so that may take additional time. Let it happen.

Just bought two tickets to Milan from NYC. More expensive and many stops along the way. However, much less money than a direct flight would ever be. 260 Round Trip. Layovers in Montreal and Germany. Here’s to hoping. Through Air Canada.

Good News: So booked the flight to Milan & it was processed + ticketed + charged within 2-3 hours. (Did this last night 11/24 too)

Not so good news: thought I booked it from 2/13/14 – 2/19/14. Turn out it got processed for 2/13 – 3/19. A whole month extra! (Imagine doing it in Norwegian made it unclear)

That said, what’s best option for changing it. If I call them would that raise flag? Other option is to change name on ticket – since my mom won’t be able to do month plus euro trip – and do a month euro trip with a friend.

Ideas on best approach would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the info Ann! I just booked two tickets this morning via Air Canada from LGA to MIL in May for $532 total and just got them ticketed! Lots of connections but who cares, flying from the US to Italy for $266 each is a bargain! The deal is still on people!

Thanks to TFD for posting this (and thankfully I “like” your Facebook page, where I stumbled upon it)…

Mine isn’t one of those “crazy” deals, but tremendously helped me out. I do concert reviews and there was a London concert announced a week or two ago, and I have been unable to find a return flight (other than on Christmas Day – no thanks!) using any of my miles accounts, and since the show is the week before Christmas, everything has been very expensive. I live in California.

I was short on time when I read about this, but was able to book SMF (Sacramento) to LHR for 701 Euros, with great flights on United (my preferred carrier with miles) – so better flights for about half what the cost I was finding anyway.

I did receive a text and e-mail overnight that my credit card was declined (an AMEX with zero balance) and I cleared that up, and shortly thereafter it showed as confirmed and ticketed on my United account and it has a receipt with a ticket number, and AMEX says the charge went through, so it was successful for me.

Thanks again to TFD and all who posted here, which was very helpful. I really appreciate it.

I think I want to help some people have some hope.

I booked my ticket from BNA to TLV on 2:16AM CST on 11/23
It took until 1:52AM CST on 11/25 to get my booking. A total of 35 hours and 24 minutes I got the official ticketing.

Also, I was rethinking my departure date, and when I called United, they advised me to call the “travel agent”. So I just got on chat with Wideroe, and asked if I could change the departure date, and if so, what the fee would be. They told me the only option is to cancel my ticket and purchase a new one (with much higher costs)… I said no thanks.

Anyway, just thought I’d pass that along as an FYI.

    Hey,
    I finally did it.
I bought LGA – MIL via Air Canada for Feb 25- March 11 for $260.60 at 3:48 central time & got my e-ticket 16 minutes later. So yes, it’s still kind of a deal. Be aware that the prices that are on the flexible calendar are not true depending on the days. E.g. a lot of the 1200- 1316 Nor flights are 1600 Nor (including all fees) on this route. Thanks, TFD!

    hey,
do you think is there a chance united will keep all these tickets?
las year alitalia had a similiar mistake, but tickets were much cheaper, even around 1e per ticket, and here I paid around 190e per ticket, so it’s completely for free.
    what do you think?

ALERT–good news, these are being ticketed, but very slowly. Repeat: very slowly, many due to partner airline issues (time zones, offices open/closed, language/software difficulties, etc..)

I booked at 1:58 pm on Saturday, November 23 EST and JUST NOW received ticket charge & receipt on my CCH–almost 48 hours.ago .

    The wideroe office is backlogged.

so I bought a 9/26-9/29 for 1900NOK($310), not as good as $150 but still cheaper than normal price. I got the e-ticket 10 minutes later. I did see a 1600NOK avalible for 2/5-2/10 but everything seems gone now. Price went hella up for all the nyc-mil dates. I think it’s safe to say the deal is officially dead?

Has anyone had any luck changing a US segment of their flight?

  177. Jason says:

Just FYI… I had booked a flight to London for next month, and a charity has asked me if I could shoot an event for them two days earlier than my arrival, so I tried to see if it is at all possible to change my ticket booked during the “glitch” deal.

I went onto their chat, and he said because of the “glitch”, they won’t make ANY changes to any of the tickets.

Mine were booked through United, and I called them and they said I could only make changes through the travel agency I booked the ticket with.

I filled out the change form online on the Wideroe site, asking if I could change the outbound date, and keel all the same otherwise (and United told me they had the same flights available on the new date) and they responded fairly quickly via e-mail.

    This was their first reply:

“These particular special offer tickets from United Airlines cannot be changed in any way unfortunately. You may cancel within 24 hours of the original purchase and receive a full refund if you wish.”

I responded, asking if I could pay a change fee and any fare difference, and they replied:

“Sorry , we are not able to change your reservation.”

I asked if I could book a new (additional) outbound flight, not use the original outbound, and still use the original return flight, and they responded:

“That is not possible. The Airline will cancel your reservation if you do not meet at your flight.”

I asked what happens if the ticket is canceled, and they said:

“If the ticket gets cancelled, we only refund airport taxes.”

So from my experience, you can’t make any change to your ticket booked under this deal. Use it or lose it.

If anyone has any other thoughts/experiences, I would be interested to learn if there are any options to make any changes.
