I wonder how much more American $$$ from tourism Brazil could be reaping in if they weren’t so emotional with their reciprocity policy. Brazil rarely ever has to worry about Americans trying to illegal stay there (And if they do I doubt they’re really a financial burden to the country), whereas Americans have to worry about nearly the entire world (nearly). So proudly putting that stupid policy in place is just limiting them from taking our money. And according to several studies, Americans travel the most (at least #2). But when you impose this disincentive, many will think “eh I rather not go through all that BS, I rather put the time and money into countries XYZ instead”.

It’s reciprocity, US does the same with brazilians, the main reason why Brazil requires a visa for americans is that USA requires to brazilians a $160 dollars visa, Argentina does the same, Chile until the incorporation to VWP did the same. Argentina, has an advantage on that, and it is that you pay the $160 “reciprocity fee” online, you just have to print the confirmation that you are elegible for travelling and nothing else and it lasts 10 years
