How to Book Delta SkyMiles Award Flights

Delta, to their credit, has a very simple site for booking award flights. If you haven’t signed up for a SkyMiles account please do so then login and start searching. Here’s we’ll perform a simple one-way search for a business class seat from New York (JFK) to Rome (FCO).

We like the flexible search – you can opt to display Flexible Days where you view 5 weeks at a time and the associated costs.

If you’re trying to route to specific city you’re in luck. Delta does allow customized routing. Always search by one-ways and search for the longest segment first then work your way backwards. For instance, if you’re going from Milwaukee to Rome, find your one way from the the North American Gateway then from Milwaukee to there. Say you want to route through JFK instead of Atlanta, find the award space for each segment then try a multi-city search. If you’re lucky it’ll price out. If it doesn’t, chances are the segments aren’t in the same class – Delta doesn’t like pricing out mixed cabin awards.

Discount Award Deals

Another nice perk of Delta’s award program is their discounted rates. Somewhat frequently, Delta offers award fares as low as 5,000 miles (one way) in Main Cabin for select city pairs. The current promo period covers February 10 to July 31; fares must be purchased 21 days in advance and blackout dates do apply. We do see some decent values available in Main Cabin such as NYC to various Florida destinations for 10,000 miles roundtrip and Seattle to Kona, HI for 20,000 roundtrip. For the latest list of discounted city pairs please visit Delta’s Deals and Offers page.
