I will admit that I am new to all this but all I can find for Sept through Dec is $285 each way. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

What are your travel dates? Without knowing your travel dates, it would be difficult for us to know why you are not finding the fare. We just priced 9/4 – 12/4 from Boston to St. Thomas for $285. See screen grab:
