Delta: Boston – San Juan, Puerto Rico. $258. Roundtrip. All in.

Spirit is having a sale to San Juan from Boston and it is $30 cheaper than the fare we are publishing. So why are we publishing a the Delta fare instead? Well, it’s actually cheaper to fly on Delta — it is counter-intuitive. Here’s a sample of the current optional fees that airlines charge for flying:

  • Carry-on Bags
    • Delta: $0
    • Spirit: $20 – $30
  • Checked Bags
    • Delta: $25
    • Spirit: $28
  • Advanced Seat Assignment
    • Delta: $0 for most seats
    • Spirit: $1 – $50 depending on seats. (Spirit will randomly assign a seat for free)

You will come out ahead only if you fly without bags on Spirit — a highly unlikely proposition! With Delta, there are no carry-on baggage fees and if you have an American Express Delta SkyMiles card that waives the checked bag fee or if you are a Delta Elite Status Member, then none of these fees apply. Always consider the all in costs when buying airplane tickets and not just the base fare. In addition, with Delta, you will earn close to 5,000 miles. 5,000 miles is easily worth $50 in future travel value.
